This paper presents the design of a novel surface-inserted permanent magnet linear synchronous motor with line-starting capability using an induction cage. The induction cage bars are embedded in the secondary core of the mover. The design allows the motor start as a linear induction motor and run as a linear synchronous motor at synchronous speed. The finite element analysis is used to predict the performance of the motor under starting transient and steady-state conditions. The results show that the motor can self-start and quickly reach the synchronous speed state. Based on this, the prototype is manufactured to verify its results.
