The speed regulation problem of linear induction motor (LIM) is investigated based on sliding mode speed control loop. This sliding mode control (SMC) is designed based on finite state predictive thrust control (FSPTC) to regulate linear speed, primary flux linkage, and electromagnetic thrust. The output of the SMC serves as the reference thrust of the FSPTC. The primary flux linkage and the thrust ripples are reduced based on FSPTC compared to the conventional DTC. Moreover, a comparison between the proposed FSPTC with both SMC and PI control is developed to illustrate the superiority of the SMC in speed regulation where higher tracking accuracy and fast error convergence are achieved. Comprehensive simulation and experimental results are developed based on one 3kW prototype, which fully demonstrate that the enhanced control method can get faster response, lower thrust and primary flux linkage ripples in response to those of conventional methods.
